In circa 1965 Victor
Gervais Lejuste
(1927-2008)launchedthe L.G.V.D. ("Lejuste G. V. Disques")
recording label in
Bangui. In later years, production
moved to Abidjan and Paris.
There are three distinct sub-labelswithin
L.G.V.D.:
Disques France-Afrique:
Afrique
Folklore:
Disques Lejuste G.V.:
Recent research had indicated that the acronym
"L.G.V.D." stood for"Lejuste
Gramophone Victor Disques".
It was thought
that the "G.V." in the acronym was acknowledging the classic series of 78 rpm discs
released to African markets by His
Masters Voice (EMI).These recordings
of mostly Cuban music were
enormously popular and had a profound influence on the
development of local musical styles
from Africa's east coast to the west. They
became known as "G.V." discs,
with the origins of the "G.V." uncertain (Gramaphone Victor? Grande Vocalistes?
Grabado en Venezuela?). I would suggest, however, that the "L.G.V."
in the acronym is
simply the initials of the recording label's founder, who, in the West
African style of placing the surname first, called himself Lejuste
Gervais Victor, as per his name on many of the verso covers on L.G.V.D. discs: "Producteur - Lejuste G. V.". Hence, we have "Lejuste Gervais
Victor Disques" as the full title of the L.G.V.D. recordings.
